Morphological cues as an aid to word learning: a cross-situational word learning study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Learning a language with complex morphology poses challenge to learners, especially adults, who may need acquire unfamiliar grammatical categories. One possible advantage languages is that the could provide cues word meaning. The hypothesis can bootstrap adult learning tested across four cross-situational experiments. Adult learners were exposed words from novel CVCV stems and -CV suffixes. In Experimental conditions, suffixes consistently mapped semantic categories (e.g. [-ke] for fruits). Control condition, did not any consistent information. Participants in conditions outperformed participants but only when there sufficient opportunities infer initial phases. These results highlight adults’ ability rapidly learn morphological information, use this information learning.

Cross-Situational Learning: An Experimental Study of Word-Learning Mechanisms
Cross-situational learning is a mechanism for learning the meaning of words across multiple exposures, despite exposure-by-exposure uncertainty as to the word’s true meaning. We present experimental evidence showing that humans learn words effectively using cross-situational learning, even at high levels of referential uncertainty. Both overall success rates and the time taken to learn words ar...
متن کاملMore Naturalistic Cross-situational Word Learning
Previous research has found that people can use word-object co-occurrences from ambiguous situations to learn word meanings (e.g., Yu & Smith, 2007). However, most studies of cross-situational learning present an equal number of words and objects, which may simplify the problem by, for example, encouraging learners to use assumptions such as each word going with one object. This paper presents ...
متن کاملCross-situational word learning in aphasia.
Human learners can resolve referential ambiguity and discover the relationships between words and meanings through a cross-situational learning (CSL) strategy. Some people with aphasia (PWA) can learn word-referent pairings under referential uncertainty supported by online feedback. However, it remains unknown whether PWA can learn new words cross-situationally and if such learning ability is s...
متن کاملCompetitive Processes in Cross-Situational Word Learning
Cross-situational word learning, like any statistical learning problem, involves tracking the regularities in the environment. However, the information that learners pick up from these regularities is dependent on their learning mechanism. This article investigates the role of one type of mechanism in statistical word learning: competition. Competitive mechanisms would allow learners to find th...
متن کاملCross-situational Word Learning Respects Mutual Exclusivity
Learners are able to infer the meanings of words by observing the consistent statistical association between words and their referents, but the nature of the learning mechanisms underlying this process are unknown. We conducted an artificial cross-situational word learning experiment in which either words consistently appeared with multiple objects (extra object condition) or objects consistent...
